The Trackman iO is designed around a permanent indoor overhead installation. Trackman 4 is the option to investigate when you need transportability and indoor/outdoor hardware capability. Before choosing Trackman 4 for outdoor use, confirm that the specific package includes the required license scope.
These products solve different layout problems. The iO keeps the unit off the floor and does not require the same radar flight-space arrangement behind and in front of the ball. Trackman 4 needs a planned unit-to-ball-to-screen relationship indoors.
Compare the room before comparing features
| Question | Trackman iO | Trackman 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Main installation | Ceiling mounted | Positioned behind the golfer/ball |
| Intended hardware use | Indoor optimized | Indoor and outdoor capability |
| Everyday movement | Normally remains installed | Can be transported and realigned |
| Indoor planning issue | Approved overhead mounting geometry | Radar layout and unit-to-screen distance |
| Package check | Home, Home Complete or Commercial scope | Included indoor/outdoor rights and software scope |
Trackman's current technical specifications also distinguish data available under iO software packages. Do not assume the lowest-priced package unlocks the same club-data set as every other package.
Interpret room-size claims carefully
Trackman's iO materials state that it has no minimum ball-flight distance requirement in front of or behind the ball. That describes the tracking approach. It does not remove swing clearance, screen manufacturer requirements or the iO's installation geometry.
For Trackman 4, Trackman's technical page lists a minimum unit-to-net setup of 4.7 meters, labeled 16 feet. Its room-planning material also discusses a longer 18-foot layout. Those published figures should not be treated as an unconditional minimum room size for every installation.
Use the current approved setup drawing for the supplied model and configuration. Check the space occupied by the unit, the ball flight segment, the screen's required rear clearance and the player's swing. A room's wall-to-wall length is not the same measurement as unit-to-screen distance.
A room sketch that settles the choice
Draw the screen plane and tee position. For Trackman 4, add the required unit position behind the tee. For iO, add the required ceiling position above and relative to the hitting area. Then add all obstructions, including the projector, lighting and garage opener.
If the room can support the iO geometry but cannot provide the approved Trackman 4 radar layout, portability is not a reason to force the latter into the room. Conversely, if you need one unit for a range and a properly sized indoor bay, Trackman 4 may justify the extra planning.
Do the layout with the final mat and floor height. This is especially important in a basement or a raised simulator platform where bare-floor measurements overstate usable height.
Separate hardware capability from the purchased license
The Trackman 4 hardware's outdoor capability does not prove that every retailer configuration includes all outdoor rights. Ask the quote to identify the exact hardware license and intended use. This is particularly important when comparing an indoor-focused listing with a more comprehensive offer elsewhere.
For Trackman iO, compare Home, Home Complete and Commercial entitlements where available. Write down the required data fields, course access and intended usage, then match the plan. Course counts, trials and annual terms can change, so verify the current package rather than relying on an older review's list.
The same applies to commercial use. A private practice setup and a paid public venue should be quoted with the appropriate software and support arrangement.
Budget the computer and continuing software
Get the current Trackman computer requirements for the intended software and display resolution. Include any swing cameras, additional displays and network connections in the specification. A PC that runs another simulator application is not automatically an approved Trackman configuration.
Record what software period is included and what happens at renewal. Compare a three-year cost using the same term and entitlements for both options. An initial hardware price alone can obscure a meaningful difference in the complete purchase.
Which one fits your use?
Choose iO when the goal is a permanent indoor bay, the overhead location works and the selected plan provides the data you need. Its installation approach can simplify shared use by keeping the monitor out of the floor area.
Choose Trackman 4 when moving the unit is a real requirement, the indoor room supports the approved layout and the quoted license covers the uses you want. If it will never leave a dedicated room, evaluate the indoor fit and package value without assigning extra value to portability you will not use.
The final quote should include a room layout, exact license, computer specification and renewal terms. Those details make the comparison actionable.
