VTrack Installation: Ceiling Height, Mounting Distance and Hitting Area

Plan a VTrack installation with the official DX10 mounting table, exact ceiling measurements, screen-distance examples and hitting-area checks.

A VTrack Launch Monitor installation starts with three separate measurements: the room height, the position of the hitting-area center, and the distance from that center toward the screen. Mixing those measurements can put a perfectly level sensor in the wrong place.

The DX10 hardware installation manual v1.1 specifies a floor-to-ceiling height of 2,700–3,100 mm. It then gives a height-dependent offset of 820–946 mm from the hitting-area center toward the screen to locate the ceiling bracket. Use the metric dimensions as the working specification; rounded feet-and-inches descriptions are less precise.

This guide turns that geometry into a room-planning worksheet. It is based on manufacturer documents, not an installation or accuracy test performed by Indoor Golf Kit.

Start with the reference points, not the headline ceiling height

Draw a line from the middle of your intended hitting area perpendicular to the screen. Call the hitting-area center A. The manufacturer’s offset, L, moves from A toward the screen. The point directly above that offset is the bracket location.

Do not substitute the front edge of the enclosure, the front of the mat, or the front of the sensor for A. Those are different reference points. A centered ball can still be several inches from the front of a hitting strip.

VTrack DX10 mounting geometry from hardware manual v1.1
Height H, mm H, inches* Offset L toward screen, mm L, inches*
2,700 106.30 820 32.28
2,750 108.27 836 32.91
2,800 110.24 851 33.50
2,850 112.20 867 34.13
2,900 114.17 883 34.76
2,950 116.14 899 35.39
3,000 118.11 914 35.98
3,050 120.08 930 36.61
3,100 122.05 946 37.24

*Inch values are calculated as millimeters ÷ 25.4 and rounded to two decimal places. H is labeled ground-to-ceiling in the manual; L locates the ceiling bracket from the hitting-area center. For a height between rows, ask the installer or manufacturer for the corresponding placement rather than inventing a mounting tolerance.

Why an “8-foot-10-inch ceiling” needs a closer look

Eight feet ten inches is exactly 106 inches, or 2,692.4 mm. That is slightly below 2,700 mm. The difference is small, but a rounded marketing dimension is not permission to install outside the documented range.

Measure the actual room instead of relying on a listing, floor plan or builder’s nominal ceiling height. Record the ceiling at the planned bracket location and any lower obstruction along the swing path. A beam, garage-door track or projector mount can become the limiting feature even when the main ceiling is high enough.

Also record the finished hitting surface. A 108-inch measurement from bare slab becomes 105 inches of clear height above a three-inch platform. That arithmetic is a clearance example, not a claim that the manual’s H automatically changes its definition. Send both measurements to the installer and have the installation reference confirmed before drilling.

Separate screen distance from sensor offset

Laon Swingcraft’s product guidance recommends approximately three meters between the screen and the hitting area. That is a different measurement from L. It should not be described as a requirement to put the VTrack housing three meters from the screen.

For example, suppose the approved room height is 3,000 mm and the hitting-area center is 3,000 mm from the screen. The manual gives L = 914 mm. The bracket’s projected position on the floor is therefore 3,000 − 914 = 2,086 mm from the screen. This example explains the geometry; it does not establish the total depth your room needs.

Your complete room still needs the enclosure’s rear clearance, screen movement allowance, space behind the golfer, and a protected position for people waiting to play. Use our golf simulator room worksheet to record those separately.

What is the VTrack hitting area?

The manufacturer’s feature section describes an 800 × 600 mm area, commonly marketed as roughly 31 × 24 inches. However, another specification section on the same product page lists 31 × 21 inches. These published dimensions conflict.

Do not design a mat cutout or two separate tee positions around the larger claim without confirmation. Request the supported dimensions and orientation for the supplied hardware and software version, then validate the usable area in the Toolkit after calibration. A nominal rectangle is not a guarantee that every point will work equally well in your installation.

A useful acceptance check is to place a ball at the intended driver, iron and putting positions, including the positions used by a second-handed player. Record which locations show a stable ready state. That produces a usable map of your bay instead of relying on a brochure area calculation.

Plan the projector and cables on the same drawing

The launch monitor and projector have different placement rules. Plot the screen, ball center, bracket center and projector lens location together. Then check the projector body, mount and cable loop against the golfer’s swing and the launch monitor’s view.

A projector throw distance does not dictate the launch monitor position. Likewise, a convenient ceiling joist does not change the sensor’s required geometry. Resolve any conflict through the mounting design before purchasing a fixed-length mount or closing the ceiling.

Run the data route to the actual computer location. VTrack’s published PC guidance specifies an Ethernet adapter with suitable jumbo-packet and receive-descriptor support. A computer that has an Ethernet socket is not automatically a verified match. Include the adapter model, available expansion slots and cable route in the plan.

Use a staged installation handoff

  1. Approve the room drawing. Record actual height, finished surface, hitting-area center, screen distance and L. Identify the exact manual revision used.
  2. Approve the structural attachment. Have the installer select fastening appropriate to the ceiling structure and equipment load. The offset table is a positioning reference, not a structural fastening design.
  3. Check alignment before final handoff. The hardware manual calls for checking calibration during installation. Follow the supplied mounting sequence and installer’s handling method.
  4. Verify native shot capture. Connect and calibrate in VTrackToolKit, then test the planned hitting locations before introducing course software.
  5. Verify the complete session. Confirm player handedness, driver and short-shot positions, computer display, projector focus and the route used to enter and leave the bay.

The measurements to send with a VTrack quote

Provide a floor plan and side view with six labels: ceiling height at the bracket, finished hitting-surface elevation, ball-center-to-screen distance, room width at the golfer, usable depth behind the ball, and positions of overhead obstructions. Add the tallest golfer’s comfortable swing clearance and whether both left- and right-handed players will use the room.

That information makes the VTrack Launch Monitor quote more useful: the installation can be checked against a specific room rather than a nominal “nine-foot ceiling.” For the wider buying decision, use our VTrack buying guide.

Common installation questions

Is nine feet of ceiling height enough?

Nine feet is 2,743.2 mm, within the manual’s stated H range. That alone does not approve the room: confirm the finished-surface reference, the appropriate mounting offset, overhead obstructions and each golfer’s swing clearance.

Can I use the same mounting point as another overhead monitor?

Only after comparing the actual reference points and dimensions. A measurement to another monitor’s front edge is not interchangeable with a bracket-center dimension. Our overhead mounting comparison explains this distinction.

Where can I find the official installation manual?
