BenQ AH500ST Review: Is It the Right 1080p Projector for Your Golf Bay?

Should you buy the BenQ AH500ST? Examine its fixed short throw, 1080p trade-offs and the parts needed for a usable golf projector installation.

The BenQ AH500ST makes sense when a 1080p image meets your needs and the lens must sit close to the screen. Its fixed 0.499 throw ratio is the defining purchase condition. If your mounting position does not work with that lens, the attractive projector price does not rescue the installation.

Our AH500ST listing is $1,999 at the time of this review. This is a specification-based evaluation, not a hands-on assessment of noise, measured brightness or long-term reliability.

What you are paying for

Published characteristic What it changes for the buyer
1920 × 1080 resolution A practical output target for a 1080p source or a PC configured for 1080p play
4,000 ANSI lumens A brightness specification to evaluate alongside image area and room lighting
Laser light source No conventional replaceable projector lamp to include in your initial parts list
Fixed 0.499 throw ratio The lens position determines image size; there is no optical zoom range to absorb a large placement error
Published 112% projection offset Height and orientation need checking against the installation drawing

These are manufacturer specifications, not our measurements. In particular, 4,000 lumens does not promise a high-contrast image under every ceiling light. A light aimed at the impact screen can matter more than a modest change in rated output.

A placement example that decides the purchase

Assume you want a 10-foot-wide native 16:9 image. Its height is 5.625 feet. Multiplying the image width by the throw ratio gives an approximate 4.99-foot lens-to-screen distance.

Now suppose your only permissible lens position is 7 feet from the screen. At the same fixed ratio, the full image would be approximately 14.03 feet wide. The AH500ST is no longer an optical match for the original 10-foot image. Digital image reduction may fit content inside the screen, but it does not turn the lens into a different lens or use the whole pixel area for that smaller image.

This example uses a native 16:9 rectangle. A full-height square or 4:3 presentation can require a different optical canvas. Work through the actual source format before applying the same distance to a taller golf screen. Our projector image-fit help explains that distinction.

The installation budget beyond $1,999

Build the quote around an installation route, then add the projector. Do not buy both mounting approaches just because both appear on a shopping list.

Budget line Ceiling installation Protected floor installation
AH500ST $1,999 $1,999
Mounting hardware Compatible mount, extension if required, suitable structural fixings Housing verified for AH500ST body, lens position and ventilation
Signal cable Length and signal rating matched to source and route Protected route outside foot and ball traffic
Power Outlet and routing at the mounting position Protected supply at the floor location
Room preparation Lighting control and safe service access Housing clearance, ball protection and swing clearance

The hardware outside the projector requires a project-specific price. A floor enclosure that fits a different short-throw model is not automatically compatible with the AH500ST. Confirm the exact projector against the enclosure’s internal dimensions and airflow requirements before buying.

If you already own a suitable PC, screen and monitor, keep them out of the incremental projector budget. If you need a new computer, quote it separately and check the simulation software’s requirements. The SG3-5602 is a 1080p-oriented option to evaluate; buying the projector does not require buying that particular PC.

Where 1080p is a sensible stopping point

A golfer whose source outputs 1080p, who reads comfortably sized shot data and who mainly practices rather than watches fine-detail video may find little reason to pay for a 4K projector. Prioritize legible numbers, an unobstructed image and a comfortable hitting area.

That is different from claiming 4K has no value. A large image, small text, close viewing or a capable 4K PC can make a higher-resolution purchase reasonable. If those describe your use, compare the AH500ST with the LK830ST upgrade analysis. Keep the PC and source resolution in the calculation.

For a room that needs a longer lens position or optical zoom, use the AH500ST versus AH700ST comparison. The decision is about available placement, not a universal winner based on model number.

Reasons to pause before buying

An existing ceiling plate is not proof that the AH500ST can reuse it. Check the lens location relative to the plate, mounting-hole pattern, orientation and rated load. A few inches of physical change can matter when a fixed lens has no optical zoom adjustment.

A floor position also deserves a real swing check. Short throw reduces the lens distance needed for a given image, but it does not guarantee freedom from club contact, ball strikes or shadows. The protective housing and the golfer occupy real space.

Finally, distinguish a setup feature from a room survey. Screen-shaping tools can help align an image; they do not relocate an obstruction, enlarge a room or certify a safe club path.

Purchase questions

Will it work with an overhead launch monitor?

The monitor normally sends shot data to the simulation system, while the projector receives video from the chosen source. Check the whole chain: monitor compatibility, PC/software, video output and projector placement. A monitor brand alone does not determine the correct projector.

Can I start at 1080p and upgrade later?

Yes, but preserve flexibility in cables, mounting and the PC budget. An eventual 4K projector may need a different lens position or stronger graphics hardware. Avoid treating every short-throw model as an interchangeable replacement.

What should I send for a fit check?

Send usable screen width and height, intended image shape, lens-location options, ceiling height, hitting position and the video source. A photograph with measurements is more useful than the room’s floor area alone.

Buy the AH500ST when the fixed lens position works and 1080p is the intended system resolution. Its strongest role is a planned close-mount installation, with the remaining budget directed toward lighting, a suitable mount and a clean signal path.
