Project Library · Reference design

A fixed SIG8 enclosure and a close-mounted BenQ AH500ST for a golfer who already owns a compatible floor-based launch monitor. The plan keeps the equipment list focused and shows where a square impact screen changes the projector calculation.

Proposed design by Indoor Golf Kit. This is not a customer installation or an on-site fit certification.

The room and equipment plan

The decision to resolve first

The 10 ft room width is the constraint. This is a single-player reference layout, with no seating or two-player clearance assumed.

Dimension Value and basis
Viewable screen used for this plan 91 in wide × 91 in high
Outer frame (W × H) 100 × 100 in
Native 16:9 optical width at that height 91 × 16 ÷ 9 = 161.78 in
Optical throw ratio 0.499 (fixed)
Calculated lens-to-screen range 80.73 in
Example lens reference 80.73 in = 6.73 ft
Ball line → rear wall 7 ft 6 in
Frame → side wall, centered 10 in per side; not a walkway approval

Room dimensions, screen setback, ball position and example lens position are design assumptions. Frame/screen measurements and optical ratios come from the sources below. Optical distances are lens-to-screen; they do not specify the mounting screw location. For square or 4:3 playing images, the native 16:9 optical frame extends beyond the active width. Set the source image and masking accordingly.

Why this layout is arranged this way

Why this project keeps the existing monitor

An enclosure upgrade does not require replacing a launch monitor that already works with your computer and simulator software. This list deliberately leaves that device out. The illustrated ball position is a room-planning reference: compare it with your monitor’s own ball-flight and device-placement requirements before buying. A radar unit that needs extra space behind the ball can change the entire plan. No VTrack or overhead-monitor fit is implied here.

The width calculation that matters

The SIG8 outer frame is 100 inches wide. Centered inside a finished 120-inch room, it leaves 10 inches on each side of the frame. Those strips are assembly and clearance space, not a usable walkway. The hitting position has a different clearance problem: your body, club and monitor must fit beside the ball. Rehearse your intended clubs from the final mat height, with the monitor position marked, before treating this room width as workable.

A square screen is not a square projector

The 91-inch screen height requires a native 16:9 optical image approximately 161.78 inches wide if you want to use that full height. At a 0.499 throw ratio, the lens sits about 80.73 inches from the screen. Simply multiplying the visible 91-inch width by 0.499 would put the projector much too close for this full-height plan. Configure the square playing image within the native frame; the square area does not display every native 16:9 pixel.

Where the room remains unfinished

The illustrated screen plane is 18 inches from the front wall, and the ball reference is 9 feet from the screen. That leaves 7 ft 6 in from the ball line to the rear wall. This arithmetic does not define a safe spectator area. The drawing contains no doorway, garage track or storage cabinet; add those obstructions to your own measured plan. Provide a suitable landing surface between the mat and screen, and assess side and overhead containment for your shots.

When to move to another project

Keep this plan if the narrower frame, owned monitor and 1080p image match your use. Move to the SIG10 project when a wider screen and a specified overhead tracking system are priorities. Increasing the projector’s resolution alone will not solve a room-width or swing-clearance problem.

Resolve these checks before ordering

  1. Identify the exact owned monitor and its screen/ball/device distances.
  2. Mark the 100-inch frame width and full club path at finished mat height.
  3. Check the AH500ST vertical offset and housing position using its installation drawing.
  4. Plan the landing surface, wall protection, power and HDMI route.

Keep a measured room sketch with door openings, ceiling obstructions, floor build-up and the complete swing path. A room that contains the equipment rectangles may still be unsuitable for the intended golfer or installation.

The tools open separately. Enter your own measurements and verify their model assumptions; this reference design is not automatically loaded.
